EDITOR'S FOREWORD

Review for Religious has been nourishing the prayer life of its readers for close to sixty years. Consistently over the years since its first issue in January 1942, the journal has presented articles exploring the various approaches which spring forth from the rich spiritualities within the Christian tradition. Praying as a Christian (The Best of the Review --- 7) brings together in one volume some twenty-eight of these articles.

The authors are women and men --- religious, cleric, and lay --- who, for the most part, are not well-known theologians or writers, but who desire to share their insight and grace from experience in the hope that others may also find profit. I believe that the authors chosen for this volume are representative of the many excellent contributors to our ongoing discovery of our relationship with God expressed in prayer.

The Best of the Review --- 7 has been the result of a number of requests that have come to me to put together such a volume on prayer. The members of the Review for Religious Advisory Board added their own impetus to my efforts. Because of the topic and because of the large number of articles to select from, it was a work of love. The difficulty has come in the selections. The articles are grouped within some basic themes that seem to be a part of a prayer life that is seriously worked at. The first theme is titled "Scripture" since our way of praying in the Judeo-Christian tradition is in response to the world of God expressed in our sacred writings. The final theme of the book is titled "Prayer Apostolate" since, for a Christian, praying is always ;more than just developing a personal relationship with God; prayer as a ministry is part of our evangelizing mission as Christians. I attempt in the intervening theme divisions to present areas of common interest for all of us who continue to desire to grow in our personal prayer life. All of the articles have been previously published in Review for Religious except for my Introduction. I have tried to set the stage of our study of prayer by suggesting a way of always finding God in the dailyness of life.

I express my gratitude to all the authors who graciously agreed to the inclusion of their articles in this volume. I owe a special debt of gratitude to Father Philip Fischer SJ, Mary Ann Foppe and Tracy Gramm --- my fellow staff members --- who always add to their usual duties when I decide to bring together articles for another book. I thank also Sister Barbara Soete SSND, who did final proofreading and corrections, and to Father Vincent Hovley SJ for his contribution of photography which graces the cover of this book.

Just as God's grace touches us in our desire to pray, so may it fuel our prayer's fervor through the articles that make up this book.

David L. Fleming SJ
